  • Salary:

  • It is not possible to indicate exact figures as the salaries depend on many different factors. One thing is certain - times have changed, and salaries abroad are not what they once were! In addition, applications must be aware that expatriate staff has often more cash on hand at the end of the months but none or at least much less social benefits!

  • Work permit:

  • A work permit is required everywhere except in Europe, where citizens of the EU are allowed to work in any country of the European community providing they have a job. For certain nationalities, even a visa is needed.

  • Applicants cannot apply for work permits, only the employers can.

  • The employer will undertake the necessary procedure for the permit application.

  • The employee is usually required to send passport photos (in certain countries up to 25), copies of professional education diplomas or work certificates (need to be certified for certain countries), a signed letter of offer, a copy of the passport, etc.

  • Very often, the work permit or visa must be collected personally at the embassy.

  • Other important facts to be taken into consideration:

  • CV (résumé) must be clear, very explicit and detailed but easy to read. Apply in English (unless you are conversant with the local language).

  • Do not overestimate your knowledge and do not apply for a position for which you do not have the required qualifications.

  • Married couples with family should be aware that opportunities are limited due to the costs involved.

  • Unmarried couples often have trouble to find jobs together due to certain complications concerning the couple's relationship, e.g. living together is not possible in certain countries.

  • Have realistic expectations.

  • Working abroad today has more to do with wanting to improve professional knowledge, taking a step up the career ladder, seeking adventure, looking for personal and professional experience, preferring to live in exotic places than becoming rich.

  • Short term employment (except in seasonal resorts and on cruise ships) is not common, assignments abroad are usually for one year at least or longer.

  • Candidates who want to work on cruise ships have to pass a strict medical examination.

  • Make sure that private affairs at home are in order before leaving.
